2008 State Candidate Endorsement Questionnaire
Please respond as best you can to the following questions. In your response, please indicate how you’d like you name printed, what race you will be screening for and contact information should we need to get hold of you. This questionnaire is used to help us get a better sense of who you are. No single answer automatically disqualifies you from consideration. In conjunction with a screening, it carries equal weight for your ranking and endorsement consideration. Candidate rankings are a new part of the process this year. This replaces the “acceptable” rating used in the past. Please download the process document from our website for more information.
If you are eligible to seek an expedited endorsement, you are still required to complete this questionnaire because of the changes to our endorsement process this year. No exceptions. Candidates who are eligible for the Expedited Endorsement process are still encouraged to screen prior to ranking and endorsement consideration, but it is not a requirement.
All Completed 2008 State Candidate Endorsement Questionnaires must be received electronically to the Stonewall DFL Political Support Committee Chair (contact information below).

1) Do you plan on abiding by the DFL endorsement if there is one for your race? YES / NO
2) If endorsed by Stonewall DFL, how will you display that endorsement in campaign materials?
3) How is the LGBT community currently involved in your campaign?
4) How will you actively encourage LGBT constituents to contact or become involved with Stonewall DFL?
5) What experience do you have with LGBT issues and the LGBT community?
6) LGBT men and women of color are often victims of multiple layers of discrimination. How would you use your office to identify and address these problems?
7) Public awareness of Lesbians and Gays has increased in the last 20 years; however there remain some unique and misunderstood issues faced by Bisexual and Transgender communities. Please identify a specific issue(s) and how you would use your elected office to support these communities.
8) What legal recognitions should be available to GLBT people in committed relationships and how would you use your office to advance these equality issues; specifically do you favor DOMA, Civil Unions, Marriage, Domestic Partnerships, or other?
9) Alcoholism, crystal methamphetamine and other chemical abuse is a public health problem in the LGBT community which correlates to increased rates of HIV transmission. If elected, how would you use your office to address these problems?
10) What policies would you support to provide equity for LGBT Minnesotans with respect to both public and private health care benefits and imputed tax implications?
11) Republican cuts in the Minnesota Dept of Health seem particularly targeted at the LGBT communities. For example: ADAP (AIDS Drug Assistance Program), MAP toll free hotline, and similar programs. How would you use your office to address funding of these programs?
12) A recent study of urban homeless youth found that in some metropolitan areas over 40% identify as LGBT. A key finding of this study was that homeless LGBT youth are more vulnerable to sexual abuse, substance abuse and mental health struggles. What root causes of this complex issue can you identify and how would you use your office to address these problems?
13) What would you do, if elected, to ensure that lesbian and bisexual women have access to a diversity of reproductive health options in Minnesota, including birth control, in vitro fertilization, and abortion?
14) What are your views on the US military “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy as it applies to the Minnesota National Guard?
15) In the past, Minnesota state employee unions had negotiated benefit coverage for their domestic partners. But, after negotiation, this was removed by the state. Do you think LGBT state employees deserve equal benefits with other employees? And is it negotiating in 'good faith' when the state removes items after their negotiators have agreed to them?
16) When buying goods & services, the State of Minnesota offers incentives to minority-owned businesses. But LGBT-owned businesses are not accepted as minorities for this. What, in your opinion, should be done about this?
17) LGBT people are increasingly becoming parents. But LGBT adoption in Minnesota is chancy. Single-parent adoption is usually possible (if you keep quiet about your 'roommate') adoption by both members of a LGTB couple is possible (if you shop around to find a gay-friendly Judge). This despite a backlog of Minnesota children needing adoption. If elected, what would you do about this situation?
